Contoured, Shaped, Anatomical, Tear-Drop. These are all terms used to describe a breast implant that is manufactured to be pre-shaped like the one pictured at right. Unlike a round implant, a "shaped" implant by design has a top and a bottom (it is tear-drop shaped). |
These have a textured surface to avoid the implant flipping, leaving the implant upside down and misshapen in appearance. This can be corrected but it is not an ideal happening. Unlike round Breast Reduction, a tear-drop implant will maintain the same shape lying down, which can appear unnatural in some women.
Some people may call anatomical implants tear-drop, contoured shaped implants. Anatomical implants are meant to mimic the slope of a natural breast. However, a round breast implant, when not lying down, takes on basically the same shape. Some plastic surgeons and women feel that the anatomical implants reflect a more mature breast.
Incisions for Breast Reduction surgery?
San Antonio
Incision placement is based partly on personal preference with the plastic
surgeons input around the goal to be achieved. Incisions for pre-filled
implants, such as silicone gel Breast Reduction, or pre-filled saline Breast
Reduction, are a little longer than those of their counterparts, the inflatable
saline implants. Inflatable saline implants will have a smaller incision. The
implant is rolled up into a "cigar-like" shape, then inserted, and finally,
filled with saline solution. These implants can be placed via any incision.
Under the arm pit (endoscopic axillary)
This particular incision has the advantage of leaving no scars on the breasts. The incision site is in the armpit, in the natural "folds" of skin, making it well-hidden. Should the scars not heal as nicely as you expect, chances are, most people won't associate scars in the armpit area with breast surgery of any kind. Most people don't pay that much attention to this area anyway.
Areola or Lower nipple
The surgeon makes the incision around the bottom half of the areola. The areola incision is currently one of the most widely used incisions. All implant types can be placed over the muscle, partial sub-muscular, or total submuscular via this incision. Breast Reduction can also be removed through this incision. One advantage of this incision is that the surgeon is working close to the breast,
Inframammary crease
The crease incision is probably the most common incision currently used for breast augmentation. Like the nipple incision, this incision site allows the implant to be placed over, partially under, or completely under the muscle, or removed from these various placements. It also allows the plastic surgeon to work within close proximity of the breast, meaning more control over placement of the implant. When using this incision, the implants do not pass through the breast ducts, which are known to harbor bacteria.
Lollipop
Some patients might require a mastopexy or a breast lift as part of their breast augmentation process. While the lollipop technique (also called vertical breast lift or LeJour mastopexy) is less invasive than the traditional approach, this is a complicated procedure which requires a great deal of skills on a plastic surgeon’s part. This approach is ideal for women with moderate to severe sagginess or patients with medium-sized breasts. However, the lollipop incision is usually not adequate to lift the large breasts with severe sagginess while too invasive on women with smaller breasts or with less noticeable drooping breasts.
Early strenuous activity is not encouraged because it may lead to increased scarring or bleeding. Patients are usually seen one week, one month and three months after surgery and precise massage technique, exercise limitations and use of supportive garments are described to the patient at that time. Always, if a patient has any concerns, she is to notify the office and Dr. Harris will see her.
